Observation Narrative
This plot is located in the same stand as plot CRSF004, but has a somewhat different composition. In this part of the stand, large Carya ovalis (up to 84 cm DBH) strongly dominates both the overstory and understory. One very large (101 cm DBH) Quercus rubra is also present, but most of its canopy cover is leaning outside the plot. The fungal pathogens dogwood anthracnose and Dutch elm disease have taken a heavy toll of understory Cornus florida and Ulmus rubra, respectively. There is considerable oak recruitment, particularly of Quercus montana, in the understory, but it appears that hickory will remain dominant in this area for the forseeable future.
